The [ahimsa cooperative] food philosophy is to: foster and build community-based food culture; assist members in a whole foods based diet; eliminate plastics & packaging of any kind, at all levels, wherever possible; and to support local, sustainable and organic agriculture and production first.
We build joyful community through healthy food culture, cooperative work, and eating!
Once every two months, all the [ahimsa] Food Cooperative members come together and orders a large amount of food from organic farms and distributors in Ontario and Quebec. About a week later, this food is delivered to the [ahimsa] space on Delivery Day and members will collect their foods.
Generally, an Ordering Party will fall on the same night to celebrate a successful order. The Ordering Party typically combines yoga, great food, and sometimes great music as well!
The [ahimsa] Food Cooperative includes a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. The program is supported by its relationship with a new CSA farm, Arôme des Champs.
CSA is a partnership between consumers and the farmers growing their food. This partnership allows the consumers and farmers to share the risks and benefits of a human-scaled sustainable form of agriculture. The consumers (or members) commit to paying a portion of the price up front, which allows the farmers to cover the costs incurred in the spring (seeds, greenhouse heating, field work, etc.). In return, the farmers commit to providing their members with a weekly share (or basket) of a diversity of fresh, high quality, local, healthy, ecological, and delicious vegetables. All the vegetables are certified organic with the agency Écocert.
The vegetables are delivered to Ahimsa Yoga Center and are picked up on Tuesdays from 5:30-7:30 pm. The vegetables are distributed in a mini-market style; members are asked to bring their own bags and containers to transport the vegetables home from the drop-off. The CSA begins in June and runs until the end of October. The basket is available either weekly or every other week.
For prices, or to register, please visit the Arôme des Champs website.
The CSA meat share consists of an average of 10lbs of meat delivered once a month for the duration of the vegetable CSA (a total of 4 meat deliveries). This includes a mix of beef and pork (75% beef, 25% pork). The meat is available at the CSA drop-off. A typical meat share contains about: 4lbs of ground meat, 2lbs steak (about 4 steaks), 3lbs roast, 1lbs bacon. The exact content of the share will vary from month to month. All packages will be packed individually (for example, the ground beef will be packed in 1 lbs packages, not one big 4 lbs pack).
The content of each meat share will balance the more expensive cuts with the less expensive cuts in order to offer a fair and diverse array of meat in the share. By getting a meat share you are supporting non-industrial animal production that is respectful of the fundamental needs of the animals. A meat share supports humane, happy, pasture raised animals with a grass fed diet. The meat is anti-biotic and hormone free.
Ferme Rheintal, a certified organic, pasture based, local, family farm, supplies the meat in the meat share. For more information about the CSA meat share you can visit their website.
